Tooth Whitening

Tooth whitening is one of the fastest and easiest ways to brighten your smile. It is a procedure that can lighten the shade of your teeth and remove stain or discoloration caused by aging, certain medications, tobacco, red wine, coffee, and tea. Whitening should always be done under the supervision of a dentist. At Downtown Dentistry we can determine any underlying causes for the discoloration of your teeth and we can help you choose the whitening option that will best achieve your desired results.

The whitening options available at Downtown Dentistry include take-home kits and in-office treatments. Dr. Foksa will often take photos of your teeth before and after the whitening. These pictures will become records of the existing color of your teeth, and will help to monitor the progress and to compare the new lighter shade of your teeth to the initial color.

For in-home whitening, we offer our patients take-home whitening kits. Our office recommends Opalescence Take Home Whitening Gels. Whitening takes place in the comfort of your home. Trays are custom fitted to your teeth and are worn for a prescribed length of time each day. The difference between a prescribed whitening kit and a store bought kit is that the materials prescribed by a dentist are generally stronger concentrations that provide faster, more dramatic and longer lasting results. More importantly, Dr. Foksa can provide the personalized advice that you need to determine if whitening is right for you.

For in-office whitening, our office recommends Opalescence Boost. It allows you to achieve a brighter smile in just one office visit. It is a top-performing tooth whitening system that works fast without the need for a light, and with less risk of sensitivity. It has a high water content to prevent dehydration of the teeth and it contains potassium nitrate with fluoride, which are responsible for minimizing tooth sensitivity.

Both in-home and in-office whitening can cause increased tooth sensitivity in some people. This is a normal side effect and usually subsides a few days after the whitening treatments have been completed. Also, tooth whitening will not last forever, so the procedure will have to be repeated periodically.
