Stress and Grinding

Stress can manifest in various oral health conditions. One of them is bruxism or non-functional teeth grinding. If you are a bruxer, you may not even know since only some people grind their teeth during a day and the majority of bruxers grind teeth while sleeping. The typical signs and symptoms of bruxism are:

  • Flattened, fractured, or chipped teeth
  • Worn tooth enamel and subsequently worn dentin
  • Loose teeth
  • Gum recession
  • Increased tooth sensitivity
  • Pain or soreness in the jaw
  • Facial pain
  • Tired or tight jaw muscles
  • A dull headache originating in the temples
  • Earaches

Over a long period of time, bruxism can cause a lot of irreparable damage. Depending on the patient, an oral appliance called bite guard or night guard may help.

Talk to your Guelph family dentist Dr. Foksa to find out if you grind your teeth and if you need an oral appliance to protect your teeth.
